Artist’s Statement : Foot
Loose and Fancy Free
This exhibition is a celebration of individuality in all its varied
manifestations.
It speaks of pride, confidence, acceptance, community and diversity. The title suggests freedom and spontaneity. My chief aim in putting together this installation was that it be, at its core, a celebration of uniqueness and to do so in such a way that it radiated enjoyment and acceptance. These pots are by no means perfect and that was my purpose from the outset of this project. My approach was to embrace the whole idea of looseness, to “dance” on the potter’s wheel. Doing this meant freeing myself from traditional methods and techniques of throwing. In doing so, I encountered a different rhythm. In effect, I began to throw myself into these pots, using my body to pull up the clay in a sort of swaying motion. From there I would assemble my forms in a very innocent, playful way, similar to how a child builds blocks and is proud of his/her creations. It’s easier to approach something when you don’t approach it with expectations. I found joy in making these pieces. The more pots I made, the more it allowed me to really engage in the process. I discovered techniques that lent themselves to new and diverse forms. Living in a world of plastics and perfection places an insane amount of pressure on the individual. “Footloose and Fancy Free” is an expression of breaking away from that. There is a truth and beauty in being able to see unity in diversity. On many levels, this show is about coming to terms with and unconditionally accepting life for all its colors, shapes, and idiosyncrasies. JODY GREENMAN- BARBER |
