The materials in the piece were either salvaged or produced responsibly, and were chosen for their relationship to water. Both cotton and paper use a huge amount of water in their production process. Cattails grow in water and act as natural filtration systems.

The cotton cord is from the last warp I cut off my tapestry loom and bears slight traces of its past. The paper for the inner papier mâché support is salvaged from discarded books. The blue card stock that lines the bottom is from an Italian paper factory that was one of the world’s first to treat its waste water so that it is drinking quality when released from the factory into a local watercourse.
